Global Energy Demand Collaborative

Lights from orbit

The goal of the Global Energy Demand Collaborative is to develop a detailed database of energy use for all major energy end-use service demands for ten regions of the world. The database will include data on end-use technology, including efficiency, usage, saturation, and other relevant characteristics. It will be historical (1971 to present) and will also represent one or more future scenarios to the year 2030.

This Collaborative will combine LBNL's experience with that of leading international institutions to provide consistent and documented demand-side information for scenarios of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. End-use energy demand and the drivers of demand, including trends in such key variables as saturation of energy-using equipment, technology characteristics (e.g., efficiency, features, engineering advances), and broader social trends affecting energy service demands (e.g., population density and distribution) will be assembled.

The first activity of the Global Energy Demand Collaborative project is to characterize energy demand by end-use for ten global regions consistent with one or more IPCC, SRES, AIB and B2 baseline emissions scenarios. The level of technological detail will vary by region and sector depending on the availability of data and information. LBNL will provide project collaborators with (1) templates for data entry, (2) an example of one sector in one region or subregion and (3) disaggregate end-use level information not published in the SRES. The results of this effort will be analyzed and provided to the IPCC AR4 authors to use in evaluating the mitigation potential of specific technologies, policies, and measures in the medium term.

This project is initially seeking data for 15 countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, UK, US.
Collaborators who wish to download the templates for data entry can do so at this site with a password obtained from the contacts listed below.
